Thank you! I used your recommendation to purchase Ba Ngan's plugin. Great customer service, too.

With the plugin, I can pinch and zoom on phone/tablet, and zoom scroll on desktop. Also on phone/tablet, the caption appears, too. Both the ability to zoom and the visible captions are a big plus for customers navigating my website!

Oh I recall the order, thanks for pointing a glitch with arrow position and to get rid of arrows when there is only image in grid, including the product page!

I know this is an unsatisfactory answer, but I've started direct-linking to images instead of lightboxing. That is, I add a direct link to each image so that it loads the full-size image naked in the browser when you click on it in a gallery. It's totally hacky and ugly, but if you're trying to proof something for a client on their phone and want them to be able to zoom in on the full-res image ... it's the only free solution I've found.

I suggest sending a note to the engineering and design team via support and let them know this is important (and kinda ridiculous.)

Just checking back in on this thread. I find it wild that this is still not a native option, to "pinch-zoom", in Squarepsace as it is 2021 and a lot of the content is highly detailed and would benefit greatly from this feature.

Getting back into web design for my sites and I will be surely trying out that plugin. Thanks for all the words on this subject everyone!

Adding onto this thread. I reached out to Square Space support on this issue.

They explicitly state that they do not support 'pinch and zoom' here: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205812708-Setting-images-to-open-in-a-lightbox#toc-before-you-begin

Before you begin

  • Pinch-to-zoom isn't supported for lightbox images on mobile devices.

If others are hoping that they'll add this functionality, let them know. The more the better. I will look into implementing @bangank36solution.

Of course, because of the amount of responses we receive, we can't guarantee changes to this behavior in the immediate future or follow up directly.  I encourage you to keep an eye on our blog where we announce new features and major updates:
blog.squarespace.com/ As a note, feature requests are often approved based on the volume of requests we receive, so, if you know anyone else who uses Squarespace and would like the same feature, encourage them to write in and let us know.

Unfortunately pinch to zoom on a lightbox image is not so easy to implement. This would need to be done through Javascript and because there is no set standard multitouch gesture that works correctly on all phones, devices etc.

Pinch to zoom exists virtually everywhere else on the internet and it should be made possible on Squarespace. kind of a big issue and sticking point. It is possible to figure out and at the prices SS is charging it is striking that this feature does not exist when it's plenty easy to do on WordPress and others.

With all due respect I would like to take a moment to ask once again to implement the "pinch to zoom" ability on mobile and desktop for Squarespace version 7.0 and 7.1

To define some terms, "Pinch to Zoom" is the ability to use 2 fingers on a screen or track pad to enlarge the photo while in "Lightbox" mode on a website bult using Squarespace

It is absolutely wild that in 2022 this feature is not available though it is on nearly every other site, app, and place I visit on the internet across devices. Instagram has it, WordPress has it, eBay has it, Craigslist has it, old blogger pages have it; in fact I am only aware of Squarespace as one of the places that does not support this ability.

When I send my portfolio pages that feature rich images to clients, and they can't pinch to zoom, I lose sales. Period. It feels antiquated and I grow weary of explaining to them why this is not possible.

There are some work arounds such as this plugin https://www.etsy.com/listing/948815689/squarespace-plugin-pinch-zoom-lightbox?click_key=711ee784955105e3eb6f2a02f688bd9b49821df5%3A948815689&click_sum=25be274b&ref=shop_home_feat_1&frs=1

However, it is buggy and works only sometimes.

I have posted this before, and many others have asked the same questions. Most replies from official Squarespace accounts confirm this feature is not available and usually cite the reasons is that it is "hard to do with JS" or something.

Considering that someone was able to make this work with a $45 plugin found on Etsy, the fact that Squarespace powers SO MANY SITES, the fact that this feature exists nearly everywhere else, AND the fact that prices keep getting raised I must raise this issue once again and sincerely implore the Squarespace devs to do something about this.

I get ads all the time, even sometimes in the design bar of my account for new ecommerce this, new scheduler that, and all the while basic features like pinching to zoom in on images, an idea that has been widespread and possible for over a decade, still hasn't hit the shelves yet...

Please, please, please just code this in. I know you can do it. Please. It would literally benefit everyone massively.

Thank you,

A customer of over 6 years with 4 sites on your platform.

Hello community,

I absolutely agree with my fellow colleagues here! PLEASE Squarespace, implement this! How can you advertise, that you are a website builder for photographers and many others, without featuring a pinch and zoom functionality. This is like selling a car without windshield wipers. I postponed my launch of my website because of that missing feature, and am close to rebuild my website somewhere else. It is litereally ONLY because you don't offer this. And as for many others, really for no understandable reason.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! Do it!

A very hopefull THANK YOU

I have been trying to get this done for years (literally).  At a minimum, Squarespace should comment on why they do not/cannot implement this.  It works on just about EVERY platform other than Squarespace, and it basically means that Squarespace is either not interested or incapable of doing it. Whenever I've chatted with their support group (and they are very helpful and knowledgeable), they suggest putting in a feature request. That has been done for years, so that says something.

As a designer/consultant, a large number of clients have complained about this (it is natural to pinch-zoom) and ultimately decided on another platform.

Finally, doesn't that mean that Squarespace is not (fully) responsive?

Squarespace please implement pinch-and-zoom. It's 2023, and people have been asking for years. Most people browse photography websites on their phone. How are we supposed to showcases photographs if people can't pinch and zoom? It's a basic feature and you guys are one of the biggest website providers. Please implement this for your photographer base.

I´m new to Squarespace and its only days since I published my site. One of the most important elements on a site, is the gallery. So when I set up my gallery, the lightbox was the best solution. But when I checked on mobile, it was not possible to zoom with your fingers (pinch to zoom). I soon understood that Squarespace do not have this ability, which is unbelievable. So this was a big disapointment, and its kind of embarassing to excuse of my customers that you cannot make the images bigger on mobile, even if you turn the mobile in landscape mode. So I´m wondering if I should buy the plugin from beyondthespace. You need a business plan to use it by the way. Is there any examples on sites which use that plugin? Because when I looked at the site mentioned above, it took an awful long time to get the gallery images to show up.

Website https://www.brendanalexphoenix.com/ contains the high-definition image and it definitely affect the load time of the image, it is expected that the plugin will fetch the most high-res version of the image (2500w), so for some images it will take a little bit more time to load ( I noticed some image are over 4MB in size )

There are hundreds of websites are using the plugin, I can share some of them here

I also recommend the BeyondSpace plugin:

https://beyondspace-showcase.squarespace.com/pinch-zoom-lightbox

It works well, easy install, and great customer service. Purchased for www.matthewgraypalmer.com

See Stone -> Snow Canyon for better resolution photos. Some pages don't have high resolution images and will need to be updated.

Nice! Took a look at your site and it work perfect on mobile also in landscape mode. Do you have the ability to have text under the images?

Yep! Under the gallery block, click design and check Show title and then you can update the title of each image in the gallery.
