edharris got a reaction from E-W in Ho do I structure pages to be broken out on a SERP?
Hi @Matt3dot0 - these are called "Sitelinks" - they're generated automatically by Google based on what the algorithm thinks will be useful for a particular user's search term. This means that the set of sitelinks shown for your site may vary from one search to another depending on the search query the user entered.
There's no way to directly control whether sitelinks are displayed, or what sitelinks are displayed. Generally having a clean, simple site architecture and navigation structure will help, but ultimately the algorithm will decide what to include.
You can customize the SEO title and SEO description fields on pages on your site to encourage Google to use that copy in the sitelink titles and descriptions – this might be a good idea particularly for your description text on the four pages currently being shown as sitelinks.
See more info from Google Search Central here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/appearance/sitelinks

edharris got a reaction from MainhouseCreative in GOOGLE indexing
Hi @Hakora It looks like Google has successfully indexed some pages from your website. When I run a search for your brand name "iyanda el designs" I see your homepage showing as the second result in the SERP. See screenshot attached.
It's hard to speculate about the other error messages you may be seeing from Google Search Console without looking at the property directly, but it's not uncommon for Google to show error or warning messages like the ones in your screenshots after crawling a website. Not all of these are cause for concern, it just depends which specific URLs they apply to.
If you're looking to get more URLs from your website indexed and showing up in search results, start by thinking through who the target audience is and what search queries they might be entering into Google. Then take a look at the existing search engine results pages (SERPs) for those queries. That's your competition. From there, you can start building URLs that might compete with the URLs Google has currently selected as the "best" URLs to show for those search queries. The most important thing to focus on is high quality content that Google will not only index but also choose to rank highly compared to the competition.
    Hope that helps. Good luck!

All good, I have found a solution.
In case anyone is experiencing the same issue, here is how to do it: remove the config tag in GTM altogether and just have the regular event tags where you manually set the measurement ID in them.
    Works perfectly this way 🙂

edharris got a reaction from creedon in I've changed URLs and I'm not happy
Hi @MattBairdSound If the site at the new domain is intended to fully replace the site that was at the old domain there are a couple of important things to do (some of which you may have already done).
Add the old domain as a secondary domain to the main, new site. This means any hits to URLs with the old domain will be redirected to the new site. For any pages where the URL slug has changed from the old site to the new one, make sure there's a URL Redirect rule in places to the user (and Google's crawlers) get to the correct place. Verify ownership of both the old domain and the new one in Google Search Console. Once you have Google Search Console properties verified for both, complete the Change of Address form in Search Console to notify Google that your website has moved from the old domain to the new one. You'll have to wait a few weeks for Google to register this change, recrawl the new domain, and start showing updated results in the index. It can be a slow process – I've seen it take a few weeks. That's why you want to set up the secondary domain and redirects in the meantime so the old results Google still displays get users to the right place.
LMK if you need help implementing any of this.

Ed makes an important point here. Reports generated by tools like GSC are not perfect. Don't become a puppet on a string dancing to every generated report's error messages. Your life will be miserable if you do. If you are going to run your own SEO you need to learn which ones actually mean something.

edharris got a reaction from Knave_girl in DNS codes from Squarespace site
Hi @Knave_girl - for issue number one, it looks like your domain is pointing to your website successfully. If you want to double check, when you look at the DNS records for your domain in GoDaddy, you should see 4 A records pointing to the IP addresses Squarespace specifies, a CNAME for www that points to ext-sq.squarespace.com, and another CNAME for a random string specific to your site that points to verify.squarespace.com. When you connected your third party domain, Squarespace will have added those records automatically when you authenticated your GoDaddy account, so it's unlikely there's anything more you need to do there so long as the Squarespace > Settings > Domain menu shows the domain as "Connected".
For the second issue – getting Google to index the site – that can take much longer. First Google has to "discover" the site, then get around to "crawling" it, and only then will it potentially decide to "index" some of the pages if it finds quality content. Once some pages on the site are indexed, they can potentially be shown in search results.
The best things you can do to move this process along are:
Verify your domain with Google Search Console Add your Squarespace sitemap in GSC Use the Request Indexing feature to politely ask Google to pay attention to the site 🙂 See if you can get some quality inbound links to the site from other websites that are already indexed by Google. Don't pay for spammy, low-quality links though! Then you just have to wait ... it can take a while for Google to index a new site.
    Hope that helps,

edharris got a reaction from Yannis in Massive discrepancy - Google analytics vs Squarespace Analytics
There will always be some discrepancy between Squarespace Analytics and Google Analytics, since they use different methodologies for counting (and excluding) the various different metrics.
The big different in the screenshots you shared is that the Squarespace one is reporting on "Visits", which is analogous to "Sessions" in Google Analytics. The GA screenshot you shared shows Users, not Sessions, so that's why there's such a big difference. Above the graph in the GA screenshot there's a dropdown menu currently set to "Users". Switch that to "Sessions" and you'll likely see some numbers that are closer to the Squarespace numbers.
    Hope that helps!

edharris got a reaction from Begona in My Blogs are blocked from SEO/Robots.txt?
That's good that those individual blog URLs are "discovered" now. Next step is for them to be crawled, and then potentially indexed and ranked. Outside of the actions I suggested in my earlier comment there's not much else you can do to speed this process up – just make sure the quality of the content is good and keep up the focus on internal linking on the site!
You can "request indexing" for each individual URL (but don't submit more than once for each one). It may not necessarily make any difference in the speed that they are prioritized though.

edharris got a reaction from Begona in My Blogs are blocked from SEO/Robots.txt?
Hard to say without direct Google Search Console access, but I'm not seeing anything that would prevent Google from crawling and potentially indexing the blog URLs. It may just be that the site hasn't been crawled recently, or if it has, the crawl bots didn't "notice" the blog posts.
A few suggestions that might help get the blog posts crawled and indexed in future:
Add the Blog to the main/header navigation somewhere Add a summary block to the footer that will include links to the three most recent blog posts or something like that (that will result in more internal linking to your posts) If you own your Google Business profile, try creating a post or two there pointing directly to your blog posts Use the URL inspection / request indexing feature in Search Console to submit a blog post URL to the priority queue (doesn't guarantee indexing but doesn't hurt) Make sure your sitemap URL is added to the property in Search Console Good luck!

edharris got a reaction from Adaptive in Google conversion tracking tag for bespoke "Thank You" page
The easiest way to do this is to set up that pageview as a conversion event in Google Analytics. Once that's done, you can import that conversion event from GA into Google Ads, and then reference it in any campaign that is optimized for conversions.
The mechanism for doing that depends on whether you're using GA3 (Universal Analytics) or GA4. Happy to help more if you need it.

At a quick glance it looks like you have the 4 A records and 1 CNAME record in there needed to point web traffic to Squarespace, and I don't see any other records in there that would interfere with that. How long have you waited after changing the records for the verification process? It can take around 24 hours (and technically up to 72) for the records to propogate.
Definitely don't touch the MX records - those are what point traffic to your client's mail servers!

Nope ... Squarespace doesn't offer a way to view form submissions. You have to rely on one of the built in storage options – pushing submissions to a Google Sheet is the easiest option.
