Site Name in Search

Go to solution Solved by Gunthorian,

Hi everyone!

I have a mystery...my site name appears all lower case in search results (both Google and Bing, suggesting its somethign on my site, not how the search engine is choosing to display), whereas my competition are all Title Case and stand out a bit more. See attached screenshot.

I have gone through all the site settings and individual page settings and cannot find my site name in lower case, or my site name missing in a setting which might mean Google is just using the URL for the site name.

I am just hoping someone might be able to give me an 'ah-ha' moment as to why this might be/how to fix?

Hi @simon.stjohn - I'm not 100% sure here (I've asked the team to double-check), but I believe it could be your site title.

Go to edit your site header, then site title and logo (attached) - you should be able to edit it there.

Hi @UFA yeah, its incredibly annoying kevin, hey. I will raise a ticket (again) with SP and if I find any answer I will post here

I think it matters because it is a small factor in improving SERP clickthrough and every little win matters

One tip I found was having a solid colour logo/ favicon that really stands out in the SERPs - mine is a purple 'B'

Hi Simon,

Thank you for the favicon tip.  Here is an odd update... I did nothing yet, this is what I found today on my google search ... FIXED!  However, there are other searches related to our blog that have the lowercase heading.  Perhaps this is a Google issue?

Hi Kevin, How interesting - great news for you! I wonder if it has something to do with the Google Core Algorithm update that started on 18th and 19th August and is rolling out?

What I have since found is I am not the only one in my niche with this issue - including a massive news site....so that is interesting.

Would be great to hear back if you notice all your other pages 'catch up' in the next while.....

Hi guys, I'm having a similar problem. My domain name is an acronym, but the Google Search site name returns the old owner of the website - e.g. it says "San Francisco Academy" rather than "Sid Fawn Associates". I've put code in the home page header to try to correct this, but no luck.

Simon - you might want to try adding code to the header, which you can do by going to edit the home page, and then advanced, and then pasting in something like this:

<script type="application/ld+json">
    {
      "@context" : "https://baligam.me/",
      "@type" : "WebSite",
      "name" : "BALIGRAM",
      "alternateName" : "FMA",
      "url" : "https://baligam.me/"
    }
  </script>

To add to what I said above, Google's documentation on the issue says that its algorithms reach a decision on what to show as the site name based off multiple factors - including how other websites link to your page. So sadly this means there's no easy fix.

To add to this again - if you're active on Google Search Console you can manually request that your website be indexed to speed up Google 'noticing' any changes

@Gunthorian Thanks so much for your replies! I have actioned your suggestion (thank you!) and requested re-indexing of the home page.

Will be interesting to see how it goes....

Thanks again for a great possible solution - I understand there's no guarantee Google will follow this but at least its a way to try and make a change!

@simon.stjohn happy to help. Hope that works. One other thing I've discovered is the Links page on the Google Console: https://search.google.com/search-console/links where you can see which webpages link to your site from across the internet. It will help if they're linking it under the name you want.

I think my problems are being caused by a lot of old blog pages linking to my site under its old name.

@AndreaDube If this is for your site, you'll likely need alternateName markup using a name like "Swayed Digital". Info here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/site-names#alternative
