  1. SEOSpace_Henry's post in How to Change Description of Site Shown on Google Search, on Squarespace was marked as the answer
    Hi @tls2011,
To change the text that shows up, you need to change your SEO title and description. To change this, click on your page's settings, go to SEO and then fill them in (attached).
Your SEO title should be 50-60 characters, and your SEO description should be 150-160 characters.
As for the helpful links that pop up, this is a bit more tricky. Putting the pages you want in the header of your website can help, as well as adding more internal links to the pages you want to show.
Overall, by having good on-page SEO and a solid page structure, you can impact what shows, but Google has a mind of its own!

  2. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Bing or not to Bing? was marked as the answer
Bing has ~3% of search traffic - so many people might not view it as worth it. Setting up Bing Webmaster Tools (to be able to show on Bing) is pretty quick, so worth it for the small marginal gains in my opinion!
  3. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Random Home Page Shows up on Google was marked as the answer
Hi @Liz1994 - I recommend submitting your sitemap in Google Search Console and manually requesting indexing of your homepage.
Your sitemap is added by submitting "sitemap.xml" in the box below in Google Search Console, and you can request indexing by pasting your URL into the "Inspect any URL" box at the top.

  4. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Changing from 7.0 --> 7.1. Will this hurt my SEO? was marked as the answer
Hi @Debbie_C - moving from 7.0 to 7.1 won't hurt your SEO as long as you follow the below steps:
    1. Map the URLs out the same on the 7.1 site as you did on the 7.0 site
    2. If any of the URLs change, ensure to add 301 redirects
    3. Complete an SEO audit on each of the new pages (my plugin has a free plan you can try)
    4. Aim to add some more content (in the form of blogs that link to important pages) and backlinks if possible - this will help build momentum when you move
    5. Ensure to submit your sitemap to Google Search Console when you move and manually request indexing on important pages of your site

    Happy to answer any questions!
  5. SEOSpace_Henry's post in SEO Title not right was marked as the answer
    Hi @Dargaud,
First of all, don't panic. This impacts my site and many other sites across Google - sometimes, it just takes time for your SEO title to reflect accurately on Google.
Below, however, are some things you can do to ensure you're doing everything you can:
Ensure your SEO title is 50-60 characters long - yours looks about right Ensure you have enough content on your homepage - if you have thin (<300 words) content on your homepage, Google has no reason really to crawl and index it properly. Add backlinks - if you have few backlinks or referring domains (which your site lacks), your domain authority will be low. If your DA is low, Google is unlikely to crawl and properly display your website, as it's unimportant in Google's eyes. Follow SEO best practices - if you're not following best practices, Google may not properly crawl and display your website. For example, my plugin has identified you have a broken link and missing alt text on your homepage (attached) Submit your sitemap: If you haven't submitted your sitemap to Google Search Console, this can cause indexing issues. Feel free to follow this guide to learn how to do this:   Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

  6. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Link Pages for Categories and Tags with no Meta details was marked as the answer
    Hi @simon.stjohn,
First of all, if you're in Bali, it would be great to connect! I work from Nebula in Canggu.
I've addressed your points below. In general, these are limitations to Squarespace - I would make a few tweaks, but in general, just carry on doing what you're doing, as I can see your traffic is starting to grow pretty quickly (attached).
    1. Unfortunately, you can't add metadata for these pages - quite frustrating and something SS needs to address
    2. Try doing a 301 redirect for your about us page and rerun the Ahrefs audit - this might fix it, otherwise, we can explore a different solution
    3. Again, this is a limitation with SS as you can't edit Tag and Category pages, but as you've pointed out, this isn't always necessarily an issue.
Technical issues can be frustrating, but if you focus on things like backlinks, high-quality content and keyword research, you can easily outweigh any negatives.

  7. SEOSpace_Henry's post in SEO Issues was marked as the answer
Hi @a-rchive - because SEO titles should be 50-60 characters, Google will unlikely just make it "archive*", so you need to give it more.
For example, I wouldn't be able to make my SEO title (attached) for my homepage "SEOSpace"; therefore, I made it "SEOSpace: Free Squarespace SEO Tools and Resources"

  8. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Trouble optimizing Google SEO for blog post pages was marked as the answer
    Hi @walevitt,
Yes, there's no differentiation between the pages. There are just a few things you need to do to improve the likelihood of ranking - "Hamlet" is a very competitive keyword, so you need to follow all best practices to rank.
I've used my Squarespace SEO plugin on your page (launching 18th April), and it's identified some things to fix below (also attached):
Your page doesn't have a H1 - "Hamlet" at the top of your page is a H2 - your H1 is one of the main things that tell Google what you want to rank for, so no H1 isn't good Your meta description is 70 characters - make it between 150-160 characters long You have a "Hamlet test" page which could be causing keyword cannibalization (i.e. when two or more pages compete for the same keyword) You have a couple of images which need compressing or alt tags adding Your SEO title is "Hamlet — The Full Text Free Online by William Shakespeare — The Complete Works of Shakespeare: Free, Online, Full Texts by William Shakespeare" - this is 142 characters, but should be between 50 and 60 characters. After fixing these, monitor how the ranking changes. If things don't improve, you may want to look at adding more internal links, backlinks or content around the topic.
    I hope this helps!

  9. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Is it beneficial to have multiple keyword rich domains 301 forwarded to a main business name.com? was marked as the answer
    Hi @luxannie
Purchasing and redirecting domains doesn't really have any benefits unless:
You want to prevent anyone from buying that domain (i.e. your competitors or people who might try and sell it to you in the future) There's a common misspelling of your business, and you want to catch people typing "misspelledname.com" It's an "aged domain" - i.e. someone previously had it, and their subscription expired, meaning it has backlinks that will boost your site's ranking. I'm no expert here and you will definitely need one if you're considering this option. Btw, if you'd like to learn the basics more, I'm launching a Squarespace SEO plugin later in Q1 - there will be a free plan and resources to help up-skill your SEO: https://www.roughwatermedia.com/squarespace-seo-plugin

  10. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Will I lose Google Rankings if I build a new website on the 7.1 builder? was marked as the answer
    Hi @Hshelton,
Your rankings will probably temporarily drop - when I've made significant changes on a website before this typically happens.
As long as you make the URLs exactly the same and resubmit your sitemap on Google Search Console, you can limit the damage to your rankings and will soon be back to normal.
  11. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Have moved from UK to NZ, page won't show up in google was marked as the answer
Hi @Ameliaj23 - hope your NZ move went okay!
There are a number of things you can do here:
Ensure you have backlinks from other sites in New Zealand - this will show Google that you are relevant in that area. Set up your Google My Business and ensure your location is set to New Zealand Begin to publish blogs which are relevant to your niche in your new location (e.g. best wedding venues in New Zealand). As with the 1st point, this is important because it shows Google you are relevant and have authority in the area. If your current domain is .co.uk, will hold you back, so it could be worth getting the .com, as this is international.
I'm not sure why you can't add a second domain, but I'm sure someone can help you out here.
  12. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Thumbnail next to google search results. was marked as the answer
Often Google will pull through the featured image on your page, so if you're trying to get this on a blog, make sure you've added a featured image.
It's a little harder for homepages, as you can't set a featured image. The best way is to make sure your homepage images are compressed and have appropriate alt tags for what you want to rank for.
  13. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Hide portfolio pages from showing in search results? was marked as the answer
    Hi Mike,
The best way to do this is inject a "no index" tag into the pages you don't want to be indexed.
You can do this following the below guide:

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
  14. SEOSpace_Henry's post in Regarding Google Business page... was marked as the answer
    Hi Harrison,
I don't believe Google will marry them up, so it's best not to risk it. I may be wrong, but hurting your already set-up account would shoot you in the foot.
Having two Google My Business pages will confuse Google as to which one to rank and confuse users as to which one they trust/leave reviews for/navigate.
I would recommend focussing on your existing page by getting more reviews and updating the information rather than adding a new one.
Happy to answer any more questions if needed,
  15. SEOSpace_Henry's post in News/article in Blog page or common page was marked as the answer
    Hi Johnny,
Using a blog page to share these is completely fine. If your blogs aren't ranking well on Google, you can try the below steps:
Submit your sitemap on Google Search Console and manually request for the pages to be indexed  Check whether people are searching for what you're writing - one of the issues with technical articles is that they are very specific/niche, meaning even if they rank, no one will be searching for those terms. For example, for the below article, you're ranking position 1, but no one is searching for that term (as you can see in the red box), so it's worth spending time doing keyword research and planning your article topics accordingly.
