All you should have to do is open your configuration from your account dashboard. Asset management is on the first panel that shows up, below the item website. You may want to clear your browser history if it's trying to pull up the old config page before the lastest remodel. 

You cannot rename image files from the Asset Library.

Access to the Custom CSS panel in 7.1 is now located in the Pages panel at the bottom in Utilities/Website Tools

Same I can't find mine either. I had it a week ago in 7.1 then today when I went to add some code its nowhere to be found. Help!

I am also having the same issue, but I am the only one who has access to my site. This is frustrating. I've been looking for well over an hour to simply find this elusive 'design' button to change my template. Every tutorial I watch says "simply go the HOME menu and click on the DESIGN button", but my HOME menu does not have a DESIGN button. Please help! Thank you! 

Is this the only way? I thought one of the SquareSpace plans would allow for exclusion of our own IP address?

If you hide the built-in buttons, you (or your client) could then manually add a 'View Event' link to the end of the excerpt of each event.
You can do this by simply typing "View Event →" (with or without the arrow!) and then use the text formatting toolbar to add the external link. Here's a short video showing how to do this:

By adding some styling to Design > Custom CSS you can make these easy-to-add links look like the buttons they are replacing:
