Building a portfolio with multiple categories using blog instead of portfolio page

Hi, 

I have a question if my idea for a "dynamic" portfolio is correct and is possible to do in Squarespace.

Case: I provide services, have use multiple skills, that I would like to present in my categorized portfolio. I apply to multiple employers and businesses as a freelancer. In creative field, it is almost certain that I would be asked for portfolio. Usually business want specialised portfolio for a specific task, uncategorised portfolio with unrelated skills/projects is a bad look. 

Example: I wrote content of an e-book, designed the layout, then was asked to adjust the layout for print, provided html email layouts for marketing team etc. In portfolio, I can present that I can: write copy, design a layout, know DTP rules, can code marketing emails. 

A solution suggested on forums: is to create multiple portfolio pages and then link to them from a single page using gallery. This solution doesn't allow for tags & categories, works more like folders on a desktop.

My idea: is to create another blog type page, write the whole case study and my roles in the project. Create single page, put summary blocks that would show work from single tag or category. 

If you have any tips how to solve this, please let me know. 

I'm not sure if this solves your problem entirely, but you could use the SquareWebsite Universal Filter for the Portfolio page, it's not perfect in the portfolio pages but it does work.

Using the blog page functionality for tags and categories, as well as the ability to use them in summary blocks is very attractive, the biggest downside I find is the ordering (dictated by publish date) and reduced editing functionality (no sections on the pages). 

The ability to reference a portfolio page in the summary blocks, and add tags to the portfolio items would be fantastic to have.

I'll give it a try if I don't find other solution.

Take a look at my blog setup, I categorize by subject a whole lot of posts with a drop down menu and each subject has its own url and each post in the subject/category of course has its own url also.. I don't see why you can't adapt this method to show your portfolio of work.

Thank you for your reply! Looks like you use my workaround idea in practice. Did you ran into any issues? 

Not really, I did learn not to put any images or excerpt text in the blog posts settings/options that contain my summary blocks. Also those posts (except for the first one-Featured Posts)  have a category, and that category is where the archive block pulls its info, so the post that has the category photography, shows up in the archive/subject block as photography.  And the post with category photography has the URL

One issue: I find it easier to do than to explain how I use two blog pages to make it look like one facing the viewer.
