Code to change background color on home page

I'm trying to change the background color on the main page using this code: 

#code  {
background-color: #000000 ;
}

But nothing happens.  Can anyone help?

You want a black baground color?  We can help but in order to do so, you will need to post your website address and password if needed. 

What does the first line of code need to say? #code? or <style>?
