Open lightbox of gallery when clicking individual image

How can I open all images in a gallery in a lightbox when clicking on an individual image block?

I want to include an individual image in my layout since that allows me most control in terms of alignment and display ratio of the image. I would, however, like the image to open up into a gallery of images in a lightbox.

I was searching for something similar and found another post that mentioned this fab free plugin by @colin.irwin :

You can tweak the CSS to show just 1 image by using 'nth-child(n+2)' and then edit your gallery grid settings to show 1 thumbnail  🙂
