    Hey all,

I just started a temporary retainer for a public organisation with a site built in 7.1.

I've not done a huge amount of work on it yet because each time I try, the site crashes! Squarespace doesn't seem to have any problems today, so I'm wondering what, if anything, can make a site particularly glitchy? And if there's anything I can do to help it.

    Thank you!

Wow! That's such a simple but important tip!

Thanks for understanding - I feel less like an idiot knowing it's not just me! 😅 😂  I've got a related issue now with image blocks, but I'll look for a more relevant thread or start another one.

You're not alone @LouiseDrever. We're all still learning. For example, here's an example of how to stop an Accordion Block affecting an Image Block by changing the way the rows stretch (credit to @guillermo_SQSP for his patience in explaining this!)

FE can be very frustrating (it is for me!) because there are lots of things going on in the background that, if you aren't aware of them, can make things seem unpredictable. Examples are
"Row stretch" (see the height of the rows in the image below) Avoiding overlapping blue boxes Creating space within the blue box for elements to expand
Can you share some screenshot examples of your issues, including screenshots of the pages whilst in the editor in mobile and desktop (showing the grid)? That may allow contributors to suggest solutions/workarounds for the issues you're experiencing 🙂.

I actually just played around and fixed it - I removed .page-section and it seems to have worked?!
So changing .section-background to .section-border seems to have solved it.
    Thanks

    Thanks so much @paul2009 .
That's good to know, and I'd never considered the collection items etc.  My issue is mainly that they think it's "so much easier" (which it can be), but they're not looking at different devices and some of the spacing makes my eyes water.
Good to know there aren't any technical issues in mixing, though.
    Thanks!

I hear you! It's an ongoing challenge to layout FE pages so they look great on tablets and smaller notebooks. It can be done but, in my experience, it often requires the client to compromise on some page designs, and it is also very time-consuming.

    Hi all,
I'm wondering what the best practice is around a site that is already built in Classic editor – is it ok to start using Fluid engine on new sections, or best just to stick to Classic?
I know it can cause some code to need adjustment so I'm happy to keep sites all one (either Classic of Fluid), but this is for a client site and they work with another freelancer who is keen to use Fluid. I guess I just want to be able to say best practice is to stick to one, and stop messing with it 😂
    Thanks

    Hi Louise,
I love the site and feel the design is really appropriate for their services.
I really liked the typing text feature, I think it holds your eye on the website and makes you want to stay to read on,  so I think it's a smart feature.
Overall, the design is simple, on brand and flows really well.
I say you're done, hit launch and stop doubting yourself! 😉

    Hi Louise,
Well done! I think the website looks beautiful. My only comment (and this is very much a personal opinion) is that I don't love the typing text at the top of the homepage. I would maybe inverse the message so
"Shetland's Multidisciplinary Engineering Firm (H1)  And maybe list project engineering, domestic contracting, Engineering consulting below (i realize it is a lot of text), similar to how an accordion would look, only if the accordion didn't expand.  OR,
"Shetland's Multidisciplinary Engineering Firm (H1)  Your one-stop-shop for engineering services  (h2) Button "Explore Services" (anchor link to services)  And the get in touch button moves just below the services?
Just passing along a thought based on my personal preference for not loving typing text. What you have looks beautiful, and is very intuitive and well designed!

The trials of different screen sizes! I feel you. I usually have the opposite problem, designing on my laptop and weeping when it on a bigger desktop 😖
    No worries at all 🙂

@LouiseDrever Thank you for pointing that out. It look ok for me but I have a 27" monitor! I'll see what CSS I can add in there.
Thank you for taking the time to give it a look over!

    Hey Leanne!
Your site looks lovely, it's really clean and clear.
One little thing I noticed, on the Project Stories page, the text on the first box (on hover) doesn't wrap like the others.
Well done though, it's always such a good feeling to get your own site up! 👏🏻

@paul2009 Thanks, yes I'd checked the status page and had seen there was no issue.
The issues are that pages suddenly become unresponsive half way through editing (in particular, when adding a link to text in a markdown block. The little 'link' button just doesn't do anything.)
I didn't build the site, I'm taking over a retainer from the person who did. There is a bit of custom code so I might try and tidy that up and see if it makes any difference.
There are also a lot of duplicate pages which have been kept as a "back up". I've never heard to anyone doing this before and wondering if that is slowing down the site, at least?
