Squarespace are you able to give us an update on when we will be able to upload WEBP images?

For those looking for if Squarespace is as good as Wordpress for SEO, no it's not. This thread is proof.

There appears to be no way to contact Squarespace and raise this concern. Very disappointing. Since the latest Google Core update, loading speed (including image file size) has been an extremely high priority and has severely reduced our traffic. Why on earth isn't SS prioritising this?

Our mobile load speed is atrocious. Please. Webp format us, and make it so it can automatically convert ALL of our pictures for us. THAT would be SOMETHING.

I feel a deep sense of sadness witnessing the ongoing absence of this implementation. As someone who wholeheartedly supported SquareSpace for their remarkable dedication during the 9/11 incident, it is disheartening to see that they seem to have lost their touch. I cannot comprehend the reasons behind their lack of progress, from the absence of a clearly defined upgrade path for version 7.0 to the omission of crucial features like this. It is genuinely disappointing, and I find myself pondering what has become of SquareSpace.

With SP not supporting webp, and loading tons of javascript that's not being used, my site is quickly falling behind my competitors with websites that load more images/videos while using up to 5TIMES less data and performing much more responsively.
Any way of making squarespace more effective or its time to move on ss?

It's July 2024 and still not WebP support? Squarespace Devs - any plans here?
This is something that makes me want to move off the platform... (we are not as captive as y'all seem to think...)
Would love to hear from the Dev team what the roadmap is in this regard. Thanks.

It's a shame that after 3 years of constant complaints SS still does not offer webp as an option they simply ignore this. I might cancel my SS sub after my first year because of that and switch to sth. else.

It's now 4 years later.  SS has ignored this known issue.  If you prioritize SEO/ranking on google,  SS is simply a bad option.  These once "next gen" image file types are now standard and SS is lagging embarrassingly behind.  Is there any excuse?

Google has stated that come May 2021, this will be a direct ranking factor.
So this is one more arrow in the quiver of those asserting that SS is bad for SEO.
In this case, Google has told us that using the old JPG or PNG types is decidedly bad for SEO.

Working on a blog for a client in two languages. We want to separate the blog so that the English is on it's own blog and the Chinese is on a separate one but both are on the same website. Right now, both the English and Chinese are on one blog together. Is there anyway to transfer the posts to a new blog on the same site without just copying and pasting? There are a lot of tags and coding, etc. attached to each post, so we're trying to do this as efficiently as possible.

WebP would really help the SEO on Squarespace; some of my blogs have a lot of images and need speeding up!

Over 3 years now and STILL no .webP support from squarespace. All browsers now support the format. Our competitors are killing us on page-loading performance and ranking higher in search results. So, thanks SQSP for perpetuating the FACT that your platform is bad for SEO.

It's infuriating that you utilised .webP on your own home page but deny it for your own customers!

Shameful and demonstrates the contempt you have for us.

It does seem that this thread has been going on for a bit too long now without an update for this...   especially as the platform themselves use WebP as the format for their primary image on their website.  This does seem like it's time for some sort of support, so that we can all benefit from the advances that they themselves seem to see the value in.

I want to second this. We have seen a real drop in our search rankings and Google consistently knocks us for not using next gen formatting. If you need to post lots of pictures on your site like us (travel site) you can reduce size and optimize jpegs only so far and they are still a lot of data.

I develop on Webflow which supports webp. But, I have a large commerce site in sqsp 7.0. I sell photography. Webp is a pretty big deal if I can cut out 2/3 of the site's meat.
I'm looking at a few files I did for comparison. The jpeg fed into jpegmini is 1.3MB. The webp at 65 compression is 500KB. I do a compare and there's not a noticeable difference in quality.
RE: Fluid Engine and 7.1 in general, It's clear that Squarespace's mission is: "Design anything without knowing how to design". Feels like it makes designers' lives harder but I need to probe further into FE.

I've become quite concerned reading through this thread. The fact that sqsp has spent so much effort developing Fluid Engine (which seems to scramble the DOM) and has neglected WebP format makes me worry about their priorities.

Been following this thread for over 2 years now. STILL NO WEBP! - It's absolutely shocking to me. Wix's presence at BrightonSEO and their focus on SEO improvements is making it harder and harder to recommend Squarespace to clients. No .webP support is seriously hurting right now.  I'm not sure I can justify recommending SS anymore. Sad and annoying.

Whether or not Squarespace begins supporting AVIF or WebP image formats will be a huge factor in whether I choose to renew my site on this platform later this year. Complete SEO failures like this are making competitors like WordPress look better every day...come on, Squarespace.
