FAVICON Won't update on Google or Safari Search

Recommended Posts

Hi there

My Favicon will not update on Google Search (Google Chrome or Safari) (See attached)

I have followed the Favicon instructions carefully (See attached) and also have never encountered this problem with past SS sites

The Favicon only appears in browser tabs

Help much appreciated!

Hi @Kfed. This looks to be a recent migration, so give it some time. Likely by the time you finish the migration work, the favicon issue will sort itself out.

what exactly do you mean by 'migration'?

Hi @Kfed. Migration refers to moving an existing website to a new location, including:

  • Platform migrations - such as moving from WordPress to Squarespace
  • Domain migrations - changing a domain or merging domains
  • Structural migrations - reorganizing a site’s architecture, URL structure, moving from HTTP to HTTPS

Google talks about site moves here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/site-move-with-url-changes

Designers that are new to migrating (moving, transferring, redesigning, etc.) websites might consider collaborating with experienced professionals for a smoother transition.

Hi- @Kfed,

I understand how frustrating this can be - below I've added some solutions.

  • Did you change the icon recently? If yes, it will take some time to get updated on search engines
  • You can use the URL Inspection Tool on Google Search Console to run a live test for the homepage and request indexing so that Google gets the updated data.
  • Have you followed SEO best practices across the page? Following an SEO checklist across your homepage and website can boost the chances of Google displaying you correctly on search engines

Additional information that might be helpful for you:

Thanks

@Kfed In this situation it is important to focus on a comprehensive plan and strategy rather than a checklist. The business has been around since 2005 and online since at least 2009 with hundreds of indexed URLs that needed analysis. The favicon will sort itself out as you tackle the key migration tasks. Google gives you a roadmap here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/site-move-with-url-changes

Don’t hesitate to seek professional assistance. The goal should be a smooth transition for your client..
