I'm connecting to my domain managed by godaddy. It has been over 24 hours.

If you've followed the steps in the guide Connecting a GoDaddy domain to your Squarespace site then it should start working, but it can take up to 72 hours. It does not matter whether the site is visible (published) but the site must be on a paid plan.

If you're concerned that it is not working then I recommend you reach to Squarespace Customer Care via their online chat service. My post how to contact Squarespace explains how to reach them.

Do I need to publish my Squarespace site before this to finish?

I just now pointed the DNS from GoDaddy to Squarespace so I know it can take up to 72 hours.

But the above question, which wasn't answered, is the same one I have. Does the Squarespace site need to be published before the DNS propagates?

It depends what you mean by "published".

The site does need to be on a paid plan. The Site Availability status (as described Publishing or hiding your site) does not affect whether the domain records propagate.

While building the site, there was a button at the bottom that read "Publish."

The site is on a paid plain.

I got my answer when I receive an email from Squarespace saying the domain had connected successfully. When I went tot he domain, there was some copy that read "Private site." Once I hit "Publish," the site was finally live.

So yes, the site needs to be published in order for the domain to connect. I imagine it has to be on a paid plan as well.
