What happens to items in an abandoned cart?

I tried searching for this. While I'm aware of the 'abandoned cart' emails that can be sent, my question isn't about that. I'm wanting to know - can a customer leave items in the cart indefinitely, tying up inventory? Or does Squarespace clear it out after some time? Or can a second customer add the same item (where inventory=1) and buy it out from under the first customer who is sitting on it in the cart?

I'm an artist selling original artwork, so that's why I'm concerned. I looked but haven't seen any settings to manage this. Does this setting exist, or is it handled automatically?

When a customer adds a 'product' to the cart, it remains there forever, even if the customer leaves the site and returns again later. The product will only be removed from their cart if you remove it from sale, or if the stock level reaches zero.

When a user adds a product to the cart they are not removing it from inventory. It is only removed from inventory when the user completes the checkout process by making payment. Until the sale completes, the same item is available for anyone to purchase. You don't need to be concerned about users adding original artwork to their cart.

I hope this helps @Slyoung.

Thank you! This is awesome!

It didn't occur to me until now - hours before my official site launch - that this could be a problem since I don't have the abandoned cart recovery option. I was having trouble figuring out if this was going to tie up my inventory, which being a tiny startup artisan business with a very limited inventory, it would certainly cause problems if my products were in a proverbial purgatory.

Suffice to say, I am hugely relieved and very grateful that you were able to answer, thank you so much @paul2009 and thanks @Slyoung for bringing it up!

Cheers!
