Help listing a physical item for sale.

I am listing physical items for sale in my shop. When listing the weight of each item, do I list only the weight of the item OR the weight of the item WITH the box/packaging? Also, if I list weights WITH the box, how do I avoid overcharging when more than one item is purchased? Please know I can't do flat shipping rates as my items vary greatly in sizes and weights. Thank you in advance for your help. Any suggestions are welcome.

I would add the weight of the item to the product, and then in shipping you can determine the length, width, and height of the box. That should be enough. With the overcharging thing, if you are on advanced commerce there should be an option for it to decide based on their cart checkout how many boxes it can be shipped in, based on the weight, length, width, and height combined.
