Hightlighted text off center from highlight

Hello, I'm having an issue with the "Hightlight/underline text" feature, and can't really find a nice way around it.

All I want is text underneath the stats to have green background with even spacing on each end, and to have some space in-between those boxes when/if they line break.

Right now, with the default application of the highlight, the text is weirdly vertically off-center. I've attached two examples. The darker green background is how it is now, I'd like it to be more like the one over bright green.

I've tried doing it without the highlight text feature, and just change the background color, but it pads inconsistently on the right and left depending on the text breaks and sizes up and down poorly.

Thought highlighting would be a simple solution but this offsetting is driving me crazy.
