I need help creating a hover effect

Hi, Im creating a site for a new product

On the product range page, I've added thumbnails for each of the ranges as a clickable link through to the different ranges

Id like these thumbnail images to have a rollover effect 

Ive tried copying and pasting some code Ive found on the web for a gradient colour rollover in the Custom CSS panel, yet nothing seems to change?

What am i doing wrong here?

Hover Image > Show an overlay

OR

Hover Image > Show an overlay + text over overlay?
