My store variant boxes are disproportionally big

I find the 7.1 template very off. The size of the variants (size & color) are way too big. Is there an easy way to modify this form?

I'm very new to this. I already added CSS to have the size, color and checkout to be displayed at the top.

I also googled and plugged in some CSS codes to have the variant boxes smaller, but then the mobile version seemed to be off.

Any input how to make this somewhat more appealing  to an eye would help? (a complete novice here).
