Change background colour of single block in version 7

Hi all,

I'm currently building a new website in the background, to replace my old current one, and learnt that i'm using v7.0 which seems to be making things harder.....

I wish to make one section of my home page black rather than white behind the text but cannot find a way to do it without affecting all pages? If anyone could help that would be amazing.
