How to add loading spinner to search block

Hey,

Is it possible to have a loading spinner in a search block? I've been working on a custom implementation using a search block that appears above my site header on any page. However after you hit enter, there's no real indicator that it's loading.

On the actual search page, when you start searching, a loading spinner will appear to the left of the query. I see the div spinner wrapper for both the search block and the search bar on the search page. However, the div only updates its contents and shows the spinner on the search page. Placing a standard search block on a page doesn't have a loading spinner when searching.
