Navigation inverted? (PERVIOUS = Next / NEXT = Previous?!)

I'm really hoping somebody can offer me some help or advice?

The navigation links on my blog have *always* been inverted - i.e. Selecting Previous, takes you forward, and selecting Next takes you Backwards?!  It's been driving me insane for over two years - but only now am i actually getting complaints from people visiting the site.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what is going wrong and how I can fix this?

many thanks for this Ziggy - this sounds like a good workaround😀  But, I'm going to fess-up to my full extent of my ignorance here - can you tell me where I need to paste the above code snippet within the interface?  

apologies for being such a dufus - i'm very much **beginner** level when it comes to finding my way around Squarespace 

You need to go to Design -> Custom CSS, and paste into there.
