Lock or Notify a page when editing from additional contributors

Is there a way to be notified that a page is being editing by another contributor?

Alternatively, is there a way to lock out other contributors when editing a page?

The problem is that if multiple contributors are currently editing a page, changes between each session are not shared between them.  Thus, edits are lost from contributors when a page is saved by one of them.
