HOME page help, looking for 'Best Practices', Principles, etc

Forgive a VERY basic question...I'm new to Squarespace (& a tech-delinquent), but, I'm plodding along slowly (okay, sub-glacially) trying to create a site. Knowing that homepage is important, I've been looking for a sorta' 'Best Practices' video or tutorial on ideal ways, thoughts to keep in mind , when creating the home page. A 'primer' if you will, ( &hopefully longer than those 30s to 1 min vids I've found). Maybe something that suggests various styles as a function of your site (I've lots of mini videos, essays, etc). Sorry to be so basic, but want to try and get the right style or look before I just jump in and muck it up...... Much much thx for any help! David P

As for design itself, there are limitless options for aesthetics - up to and including art school and advanced degrees in design.

Generally, you want to have a good hero/splash image, attention grabbing caption or headline, understandable menu - including Home, About, Contact, Shop, and Search - and, always, keep it focused. Too many fonts, colors, or subjects can confuse a viewer.
