Got an answer back from customer care. No resolution, but the bug is supposedly on the list of things to fix:

Okay thanks, that makes sense. I have submitted a case to Squarespace customer care with the text from the original post in this thread. I'll kep you all posted!

This is a bug with Squarespace's own parser that is designed to safely remove code. As this functionality is part of the Squarespace "backend" to which none of us have access, you'll need to contact Squarespace Customer Care directly and report this.
