The themes are better (they're not perfect) but it allows you to have a consistent set of colors for each section which in turn means that you should have a cohesive looking website. There are a lot of colors to set, but the baseline gets set by the color palette and you can make changes from there.

It is overwhelming, but stick with it, learn to use the different themes on the page and see how it helps your design process.
