Is it possible to create a custom authentication extension

Hi,

I'm rather new to Squarespace, but have a lot of experience with customizing WordPress. We have build a plugin for WordPress to allow for a custom authentication and automatic information sharing based on Verifiable Credentials. We would really like to create the same plugin for Squarespace. I have looked at the documentation and the custom code examples based on HTML, CSS and JavaScript are too limited. But I read it is also possible to create your own extension. Would this be an option? And if so, is there some good documentation to start developing such an extension?

Thanks for your reply. The documentation mentions styles and javascript, but we really also need some server-side logic, because of secrets that we don't want to be exposed client-side. Do you maybe know any parties that can build such an extension? The first interested party would be FIDES (https://fides.community).
