Does a domain transfer require a 301 redirect?

Recommended Posts

Site URL: https://www.lcua.info

I transferred my domain to Squarespace in August and published my site a few days ago. Should I do a 301 redirect? My new Squarespace site does rank higher in a Google search, but the old site also shows up below it. I am unsure how to proceed since the domain is identical.

The new domain is https://www.lcua.info

Here is the link a page from my previous host: https://www.lcua.info/faq-1

The error message to the old link is:

We couldn't find the page you were looking for. This is either because:

  • There is an error in the URL entered into your web browser. Please check the URL and try again.
  • The page you are looking for has been moved or deleted.

You can return to our homepage by clicking here, or you can try searching for the content you are seeking by clicking here.

Thanks for your help!

301 redirects are for redirecting unused URLs so you don't have 404 errors. Have you changed your page URL structure?

When you say you transferred your domain, did you transfer the domain between domain registrars? Or did you move change the website that it was pointing at, i.e. a new website on Squarespace?

A domain transfer itself does not automatically require a 301 redirect; it only involves moving a domain from one registrar to another. However, if you're changing the domain name or moving content to a new domain, setting up a 301 redirect is necessary to ensure that traffic and search engine rankings are transferred smoothly from the old domain to the new one. This helps preserve SEO value and ensures users are directed to the correct site.
