How to Change Dropdown Menu Colors without Changing Sitewide Background Color, 7.1 Site

Anyone know how to change the color of your dropdown without editing the sitewide background color? I followed the info in the help article regarding this subject, tried it, and it did nothing. Maybe I did something wrong. I need my dropdown menu background to be transparent. I'd appreciate any help!
