How do I publish my site? Squarespace says it's active, but it's not

I've purchased and registered my domain with Squarespace. I have purchased the Commerce version of SquareSpace website development and have begun creating pages. I've checked the site as "Public", and the account says the site is active, but it's not. The URL returns the error, "

This site can’t be reached

totalcompensation.net’s DNS address could not be found. Diagnosing the problem.

From what I can see, there's no "Publish" button in the site developer tool. 

How is this done? Do I need to purchase an additional hosting package? 

To connect your domain to your site: 

1. Open your domains dashboard.
2. Click your domain.
3. Click Website.
4. Click Connect existing website.
5. Select the new site you'd like to connect the domain to.
6. Click Next, then click Confirm.
