Vimeo Thumbnails displaying graining

I'm working with a client who has 100s of videos that we're creating new thumbnails for to help with visual cohesion. We're using Vimeo as the library but adding new thumbnail images with text means they're being pulled through blurry. 

I've tried contacting support and they suggest uploading the videos directly to the site but with this much content it's just not possible. 

The thumbnails I'm creating are 1280 x 769px but it's still looking terrible. The site isn't live as it's a re-build of the current one. 

Can anyone suggest some custom code to try to resolve this?
