Is it possible to change a customer's subscription on a digital product membership plan without them having to cancel and resubscribe?

Hello, a client recently introduced new annual and 6-month subscription pricing options for an existing membership site. Can existing members on the monthly plan be upgraded from the backend or do they have to cancel current plans and sign up to a new one to avail of annual pricing:?

If this is the case, is it possible to refund customers for the rest of their monthly subscription on a pro-rata basis?

Individual members must cancel and resubscribe. It isn't possible to make changes from the backend.
