Problem with Domain Routing (under construction) Is this an Internal Routing Issue on Squarespace?

I’m dealing with a challenging issue related to domain routing on my Squarespace site, and I’m hoping to get some advice or see if anyone has encountered something similar.

The Issue:

My custom domain, thegatheringchurch.ca, is connected to my Squarespace site, but when I access the site via this domain, I only see a “Site Under Construction” message. However, the site works perfectly when accessed through the default Squarespace URL (e.g., yourname.squarespace.com) or with other connected domains.

This started after trying to move the domain ownership to another squarespace account. This action failed, and the account wasn't moved.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • Domain Management: The domain “thegatheringchurch.ca” is registered and managed through Squarespace, so both the hosting and DNS management are handled within the same platform.
  • DNS Settings: I’ve verified that the DNS settings are correct, with the appropriate A records and CNAME pointing to Squarespace’s servers.
  • Site Setup: The site is set to “Public,” and the homepage is properly set up in the main navigation.
  • Disconnect and Reconnect: I’ve tried disconnecting and reconnecting the domain “thegatheringchurch.ca” multiple times, but the issue persists.
  • Alternate Domains: I tested other domains with the site, and they work without any issues, which suggests the problem is isolated to “thegatheringchurch.ca.” You can see the site at "https://www.meaningfulway.ca/"

Possible Cause:

Given the steps I’ve taken and the behavior observed, it seems there might be an internal routing issue with the domain “thegatheringchurch.ca” on Squarespace’s end. The domain appears to be correctly set up, but it doesn’t seem to route properly within Squarespace.

Request for Help:

I’m reaching out to see if anyone has experienced a similar issue or has any further troubleshooting steps I could try. At this point, I’m trying to determine if there’s anything more I can do on my end, or if this is an issue that Squarespace support needs to resolve.

Thank you in advance for your help!

You're seeing the under construction message because the domain name thegatheringchurch.ca isn't connected to the site bell-onion-3f9t.squarespace.com. Once correctly connected, you'll see the website instead. There are two steps to connect it. Choosing 'connect' and applying the correct IP addresses.

As a first step, please go to the domains panel on your website using the link below and check the status of whether the domain name thegatheringchurch.ca:
https://bell-onion-3f9t.squarespace.com/config/settings/domains-email/domains

Next, check that the IP addresses have been added. Remove any that aren't correct and then choose Squarespace defaults from the Add preset menu usually fixes this.

Thanks for your reply. As I mentioned in my post, it is connected. I have tried to disconnect and reconnect it. This works when I use other domains I own, but for this domain, there is no effect. I can't connect it to a different site (I've done that with other domains). No matter if it's connected or disconnected or connected to another site, it still shows the same "coming soon" page.

Your thegatheringchurch.ca domain is pointed to 198.49.23.144, a parking page. Your www.thegatheringchurch.ca  has two A records pointed to the same address.

The first thing to try to do is edit the thegatheringchurch.ca  A record and change the IP address to

198.185.159.144 the same address that meaningfulway.ca and other working Squarespace sites are pointed to.

Thanks for the input, Derrick,

I have given that a shot. It seems to not resolve the issue. After flushing my DNS cache and trying I still route to the coming soon page. I tried adding the SquareSpace DNS defaults and I get an error message when doing that. I added them manually and now have all 4 "A" records that are part of the presets.

It seems like no matter what I do to the DNS and the SS settings, it will route to SS but never to another site and only to the coming soon page.

The two top A records need to be deleted, they have priority and are pointing to the parking page. The bottom two should point to your site.  I should have said delete the 198.49.23.145 not edit it. If you can't do that then Squarespace says to delete all default records for the domain not connecting choose the domain I own option and then load the defaults again.

After checking your DNS settings against mine they look correct, and this has happened to a a few domain owners here. The cure was to delete all defaults and choose the domain I own.

Thanks Derrick.

That seemed to finally do the trick. I deleted all the records including all the CNAME and other DNS records and re-attached the domain to the site. Seems to be working now!

The advice has been much appreciated.
