Customizing Project Pages Using the Layout Background: Hover

I'm hoping to adjust the appearance of my project page (seen in image). It seems the images that appear upon hover have a slight black overlay, and I want to remove that. I'd also like to stop images from stacking on top of each other as you hover over subsequent items (this keeps happening even if "Keep Last Selection" is unchecked.

Couldn't sus out the code responsible by myself, unfortunately, so looking for any advice!
