Our designer enabled developer mode and now I'm confused

Recommended Posts

I created our choir website some 7 years ago but the committee wanted it professionally styled, so they handed it to a web design consultancy, who changed the template (I think) then turned on Developer Mode.

Recently, we've had one or two problems with the styling but the consultancy say they're no longer taking on support work. I'm no CSS wizard, but I know enough to be able to research what I don't know, and I'm not scared to dive into the browser web dev tools.

Nevertheless, I'm having great difficulty finding out what they've done under Dev Mode.

Under Website Tools, there's nothing under Custom CSS except a single line to correct one of our problems, and nothing in Code Injection except an EU Cookie widget.

Settings - Developer Tools contains a yellow bar allowing me to connect to github, but if we're already connected, no indication of the fact, or the github account. But there's a red DISCONNECT button that I daren't touch for fear of breaking the site.

I don't know where else to look.

Originally, I was Site Owner, but since handing it over to a committee member I've been reduced to a Contributer with Admin and Billing permissions. Do I need another permission to see what I need to and to fix up the styling?

Many thanks - Philip

Hi Philip 👋 @pleriche

Can you share a link to the site and explain what the styling issues are? If they've only appeared recently, this may give some clues about the cause(s) and it may be possible to workaround them with some Custom CSS instead of delving into the Developer Mode files that are stored a series of predefined folders and files. You'll find details of these here: Template Overview.

Bear in mind that Developer Mode enabled websites can require constant maintenance by the developer because, as soon as DM is turned on, Squarespace stops sending updates and patches to the website.

Thank you @tuanphan, but as I said, the designer didn't put anything in there.

Thank you also @paul2009 but the minor styling issues are not the problem, rather, how to see what the designer did after tuning Dev Mode on. Since he didn't put anything in Custom CSS, where could he have put it, and how could he have sneaked it in there?

The developer will have added code directly to a series of predefined folders and files that Squarespace define. You'll find details of these here: Template Overview

Can you provide details of the issues you are experiencing, so we can take a look? A link to the site and some screenshots will help us to understand the issues.
