Cannot transfer ownership of the domain

Sort of how the title explains it. I have a client that recently had a change in business structure and some ownership and they are trying to give "ownership" to the correct email account that is associated with each business. We have followed the steps here

Here's our steps we did today that did not work....

1. logged in as current owner and started a brand new trial site
2. added payment information but did not sign up for a subscription (this is what their doc says to do)
3. moved the domain over to the new trial site
4. invited the new potential owner and they accepted
5. transferred ownership

This resulted in the new account becoming the owner of the trial site but not becoming the owner of the domain. They also did not get any permissions to the domain itself at all even though they are the current owner of the site itself.

Anyone had to do this recently and figured out how to go about it?

We are also trying to change ownership of a domain in Squarespace, we did the same and the site transferred ownership but the domain did not. Is there any known solution to this issue?

I was looking for answers as well.

I need to change the ownership of a domain, but there is no way to do so. I was able to change the domain owner's name, but even though the ownership information has been changed, the new owner cannot update the billing information. They can only administer a domain.

Even if the owner has another Squarespace account, there is no way to do so. I was trying to get online help, but I was not lucky; it says that many people are looking to chat with the support team.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. There are many articles on transferring domains to and from Squarespace, but I could find nothing about transferring a domain from one Squarespace account to another. Ownership of the domain has changed, so it needs to be done!

Eventually we had to have Squarespace basically do it for us because the steps in the guide did not work. I would reach out over chat first and then it should continue through email. They will send you the article and then you just tell them you did it already and it should get escalated.

Good luck!

Also in the same boat...i got support on a chat and they told me to do the contributor transfer on a trial website but that only changed the owner of the website, NOT the domain. So now I am trying to contact them again to get them to escalate. I don't remember this being an issue with Google Domains so hopefully they will figure it out.

Same here. World class support is world class non-existent. Domain transfers from Google are in space...hence the name. Squarespace sends emails to renew but the links direct to a recurring circle back to the same page.  Accounts aren't recognized yet they just sent an email. Off to their support links only to refresh to go nowhere. Then... reach out to posted email on the contact support page only to get an email back the email is no longer serviced.

Does Square space actually have support to resolve these issues???

Ok i got this one figured out. You have to setup payment information for your trial website that you made the new owner. Once you do that logout and back in and it will redirect the domain permissions to the website permissions. The trial site will just expire and get deleted so you can't edit it, but the website permissions owner will remain the domain owner. The new domain owner will need to verify email of course after adding billing information to website section. Cheers!

I am also trying to change ownership of three domains from one Squarespace account to another Squarespace account. There is no website associated with any of the three domains. I can get the domain ownership changed, but then permissions for the domain continue to show the past Squarespace account as the owner. How to get this done without any website(s)?

Hi @AndGov, thank you for posting here.

It sounds like you may be updating the domain contact information rather than changing ownership of the domains. Changing ownership of a parked domain requires that you move the domain to another site, first. We have step-by-step instructions in this guide:

Managing domain permissions - Update the domain owner

If you encounter any trouble while moving the domains, and for any others experiencing a similar issue, please reach out to our Customer Support team directly, here:
