I want to change the name of my website which was developed with google sites. In order to do that I want ot custom URL in sites settings and follow those instructions preciseley:

To use www.adastranova.org, follow these steps:
  1. Sign into your domain hosting service (eg. Google Domains)
  2. Navigate to your DNS management page for adastranova.org
  3. Find the CNAME settings and enter www as the CNAME value or alias
  4. Set the CNAME destination to ghs.googlehosted.com
  5. Save changes and click Add Custom URL below

Then this is the message that pops out, and I do not know why. Here is a photo: https://prnt.sc/FBKINkGfbrqD

Just as an experiment, I added two "ww" instead of three "www" and squarespace accepted the request and saved it, but of course - this doesn't work for me... any suggestions?

I am getting the same, when I was forceably migrated from Google Domains, the A, AAAA and CNAME records did not come across. Now when I attempt to enter the CNAME record www for value and ghs.googlehosted.com for data I am getting the same error.

Not sure if this applies to your situation, but I was getting the same error message when trying to point my domain to Substack. This is what Squarespace support said:

The Squarespace Defaults need to be removed first before you can point the domain away from Squarespace.

Follow these steps to point your domain:

Open your domains dashboard: https://account.squarespace.com/domains

Click the domain name you’d like to point.

Click DNS.

In the Squarespace Defaults section, click the trash can to delete them.

In the Custom records section, click Add Record.

Enter the information given to you by your provider and click Save. Repeat this for each record your provider gives you.

Test the connection by visiting your domain in a new private or incognito window.

John, did you read your own link? OP posted the exact steps from Step1, and explained that those steps produce an error. Please respond and verify that you have

1. Looked at and fully read + understood the content of the support article you posted
2. Looked and fully read + understood the content of the original post.
