Designing a commercial photographic portfolio

Recommended Posts

I have searched through the Forum and cannot find a solution to my problem with site design.  I am not an expert and do not understand CSS code.  Currently I am trying to create a website using SquareSpace version 7.1 which will contain a portfolio of images that will be for sale. In order to maintain a reasonable site speed, I will be using smaller versions of each image. I will then mail the larger images to customers as required.

I currently have a main landing page which contains 6 main categories i.e. Travel, Nature and Wildlife, Infrastructure etc. When you click on one of these main categories you will be sent to a page that contains variations of the main category i.e., under Nature and Wildlife will be Plants, Trees, Landscapes, etc.

Each of these sub-categories will have approximately 300 or more images and I would like them to all display in a way that shows the images in their best layout and correct aspect ratio i.e. Landscape and Portrait on the same page.

Currently I am using Summary blocks to achieve this (which then links to the Store page) but would prefer if the Store Pages could show the images in their correct aspect ratio so that the site visitors could land directly there.  (my reason is that the Store page can take up to 10,000 images but the summary blocks only 30 and I don’t want to use tags etc to connect them)

Or is there another way to create this.  I tried Gallery Pages but the Store pages do not automatically upload to them as they do to Summary blocks.

I would be grateful for any advice regarding this issue.

There are a number of ways to do this.

I wrote about one solution here: Product image aspect ratios on Squarespace 7.1. Let me know if this helps 🙂.

Thank you for your very interesting solution.  My only worry is that I am totally unfamiliar with CSS and rather nervous about using it.  I would not know where to start. I intend to reread your helpful article to see how it all works.  Many thanks
