Keeping sub categories visible in a store

Is there a way to have the categories still as options to select while in a specific category? We have our shop online page with four categories that show up when you click "Shop Online." But if you pick one of the categories, you would have to go back to the main "Shop Online" rather than click through to another category. There is an option to add the main category "yarn" always be visible, but it appears with a / after it. Not particularly tidy. I've tried to add a block hoping I could put buttons for the different categories in, but that's not an option.
