Domain forwarding. Path Forwarding > Maintain Path option is not saving

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am forwarding my domain to another Squarespace managed site https://tatjanavonstein.com . However, when I select the path forwarding option to Maintain the URL paths, I flick it to yes and click save but when I click out, the rule reverts to Do not forward paths'. This is very frustrating as I have forwarded other Squarespace managed sites before and never encountered this problem before.

Please can someone help as the site needs to forward urgently but without 404s. I do not want all urls to forward to the single root domain url.

Thank you x

I'm not sure why the path forwarding isn't working, but removing the "https://" in the target domain may help. This is one of the troubleshooting steps in Squarespace's domain forwarding guide - Forwarding a Squarespace domain - troubleshooting

That said, for Squarespace sites, linking both domains to the site's Domains panel is typically preferred, rather than using domain forwarding. When multiple domains are connected to a site this way, they all redirect (301) to the primary domain automatically. For a Squarespace domain, you'll do this by moving the domain between sites: Move a Squarespace domain to another Squarespace site

This setup can also help avoid a negative impact on the site's SEO: A redirect tells the browser to fetch a new URL and ensures that the SEO benefit passes through to the target domain.

Thanks @PixelSoda

Ok thanks. I will look at linking domains to the primary domain in the panel. We want to keep the SEO backlinks to the old site and have carefully retained the URL path structure for this purpose. Domain forwarding and Path Forwarding creates the 301 redirects but path forwarding option is not working even without the https:// so we will try Plan B.

Hi we are having the same issue, is there any fix? I don't understand why this is not working, it's so simple. We were victims of the Google Domains transfer unfortuantely. It was working fine on Google Domains, now completely broken on SquareSpace...

Sorry to hear it's still being troublesome! The domain forwarding rule that Squarespace added to their platform should support 301 and 302 redirects for path forwarding. If it's not working, there might be an issue related to Squarespace. You'll need to contact Squarespace support for them to take a closer look, though - https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/requests/new#choose-topic
