Can a make a completely different website using the same domain but with an extension?

Recommended Posts

This might be something that requires a second website. If you went this route, you could connect the subdomain composites.taniq.com to the second site and even add a URL redirect to send www.taniq.com/composites to composites.taniq.com.

Otherwise, I came across this thread earlier where someone asked about making two websites under one domain, each with a separate navigation bar:

There's a reply suggesting that custom code can be used for this, so it may be worth following the thread for more information.

Thank you.

I read a bit about subdomains. Can I connect composites.taniq.com to taniq.com instead of creating taniq.com/composites? Or maybe I misunderstand something here.

Also, I tried looking into where to create a subdomain. There is an instruction from Squarespace (https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205812058-Creating-a-subdomain-for-your-Squarespace-site?platform=v6&websiteId=64870efce3960b1a159484b3#toc-edit-a-subdomain) but it seems the platform gets updated very frequently, now I can't find the options to create one like in the instruction.

The steps for creating and pointing a subdomain may be a little different depending on who hosts your domain. Do you have a Squarespace domain or a third-party domain host, like GoDaddy?

You could connect both the subdomain composites.taniq.com and taniq.com to the same site, but only the primary domain (taniq.com) would show in the web address bar. With Squarespace, when multiple domains (including subdomains) are connected to a site, they all redirect to a single, primary domain

Another option is to set up a forward that makes composites.taniq.com send traffic to a specific page of your site, but visitors would still see the primary domain in the web address bar.

As an example, if you set up a forward for composites.taniq.com that led to taniq.com/composites, anytime a visitor enters "composites.taniq.com" into their web address bar, they'll see the "Composites" page of your site, but the URL will also update to taniq.com/composites.

Ultimately, I think these would be your best options:

Create a second website for composites.taniq.com
This would require a second website subscription, which may not be ideal.

Add a forward for composites.taniq.com to taniq.com/composites
This option lets you keep a single site, but will either require some custom code to change the site header or you can hide the site header and use a regular page section to manually build a new header. With this option, visitors will still see taniq.com in the web address bar.

Here's some information on hiding a site header, in case you'd like to experiment:

Hi,

Thanks for the explanation.

However, the idea is to make this Composites branch of the website more separated from the content of the main website, which would have its own navigation and webpages. Does this mean I have to go for the option of creating a new website on Squarespace then points composites.taniq.com to it? Because I believe I have also checked the option of manually building a new header using a page section, but that doesn't make it a proper navigation with drop-down menus.

Ah yes, manually building a site header does mean some features wouldn't be built-in, like the drop-down menus and the way the header changes on mobile devices.

It sounds like creating a second website and pointing composites.taniq.com to it would be the most straightforward solution. This wouldn't require any custom code and visitors would see two different URLs for each site.

Deciding which option is best can be a little tricky in this case since it has to do with how much time or cost you want to put towards a solution. Personally, if you don't mind having a second website hosting subscription, I'd opt for building a second website since I think it would be easier to manage in the long run. These are the pros and cons that stand out to me:

Build a second site for composites.tariq.com
Pros - No custom code required, able to have pages and navigation that are independent of the first site, visitors will see composites.tariq.com in the web address bar
Cons - Requires a second website hosting subscription

Use custom code to display a different site header on some pages of your site
Pros - No need to purchase a second website hosting subscription
Cons - Requires custom code (not something Squarespace support will help with), visitors will see tariq.com in the web address bar (even if they use the URL composites.tariq.com to get there)
