Having both a 7.0 and 7.1 site

I have a question about updating to a 7.1 site. 

My orig website is 7.0, and I'd like to keep it that way. However, I was thinking of duplicating my site and updating the duplicate to 7.1 to see how it works. Does anyone know if this is possible?
