Overlapping odd shapes & clickthrough links, can't seem to get it working

Recommended Posts

Heya all. I'm in the middle of creating a page for a friend, and this is my first time making a website since Yahoo Geocities circa 2003ish. Squarespace is obviously better, but I'm struggling with some basic stuff here.

I wound up designing a section of her home page with overlapping buttons. Each button should be linking to a different page. These buttons were created by using a rectangle shape block and rounding the edges by 550ish (maybe 555? I forget tbh). Later, while trying to figure this out on my own, I made the shapes in photoshop as well, so we can use either a Shape block or an image block or code block.

I've encountered several problems when trying to make this work:

  1. Image blocks with links are always rectangles, even if they are .png files with transparency. This results in areas where the button is rounded and should not be clickable, but are.
  2. Shape blocks themselves cannot be links. And even if there's some code to make it work, the code would have to obey the rounded corners or we'd have the same problem as #1.
  3. I tried making image maps using rectangles and circles combined to mimic the button shape. None of these worked, including using websites to create it for me.
  4. I have 4 small buttons, and then in the middle a larger button that is on top of them, with a little overlap. Again, we face the issue of any link on this shape or image not obeying the curvature of the corners or transparency of the png, leaving areas of the smaller buttons underneath incorrectly linking to the larger button target instead of their own.

I'm at my wit's end here, to be quite frank. If I can't get a fix to this, I'm going to have to redesign that section entirely and only use basic rectangles and it'll look generally crappy. Requesting help! I can somewhat understand code that other people write, but I cannot write it myself.
