drop down nav changes background color

Hi there!

I'm not loving the black box that gets created when the "work" is selected on this specific page of my site. Also, there's a quick black bar that pops up as well and then disappears. I know it has to do with legibility with the black and white photo being there, but I think it will still be readable. Could someone guide me as to either what code I need to input to make both go away and/or if there's something I either need to select or deselect in my settings options. Thanks so much!
