Has this happened to you: I need to remove custom code before I can edit things in the site backend

This has happened to me more than once in the past year, and I'm wondering a) if this has happened to any of you and b) if you know any other workarounds other than deleting the code at the beginning of every editing session and adding it back in.

The editing involves adding a pdf to the site, and/or tweaking a button in any way. Two or three times now I've gone to add a link to a pdf for a button, and it just doesn't work. I try clearing cookies, using different browsers, chatting with the chat help, etc, and they always have to get back to me via email because they are also flummoxed. Anyone had this issue?

p.s. it's the same custom code we've had on the site since we launched it in 2020 -- it's only in the past six months that this editing functionality problem has arisen. Curious!

If you're experiencing issues with custom code, you can login to your website using the URL slug /config/safe to temporarily disable it.

Code that you added in 2020 may now be out of date and require updating because the Squarespace platform is continuously updated. I recommend approaching the original author to see if they can help. For further help from the community, please provide a link to the site 🙂.

Thank you! I log in at this screen: Squarespace — Account Dashboard

(account.squarespace.com)

Could you tell me where I would add the URL slug /config/safe ? That sounds super promising but I'm not sure exactly how to do this.

Great idea on contacting the original author -- I've been in touch with a few of those but they weren't super helpful so far.

Use your site’s domain name with it appended to the end. For example, if your site's built in domain name was mysite.squarespace.com you’d use mysite.squarespace.com/config/safe to login with scripts disabled. You can even use it with your primary domain name 🙂.
