Backup Squarespace website with more than 100 pages

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am currently in the process of backing up all of websites that I manage for a charity. I have been able to make copies of 5 websites that are less than 100 pages.

However, our 3 main websites are more than 100 pages so I cannot make copies of them. What is the simplest way for me to make copies of the content on these 3 websites?

One of the websites is 500+ pages so I don't want to individually export each page. Is there a way for me to export all of the content in one go? I only really need the written content.

Thanks in advance!

Can you tell us more about the purpose of making these copies. Are there particular risks you are hoping to mitigate?

Hello,

Thanks for your response. To be honest, I'm just doing this because I've been told it's very important to do (mostly in case the websites got hacked, or another team member accidentally deleted important content).

The charity I work for has never backed up any of the websites, so I thought it would be good to introduce it as a new annual protocol. But do you feel this isn't necessary? Thanks

I'd always encourage anyone to backup their data - on any platform. Squarespace doesn't offer traditional "backup" options in the same way as some other platforms because they try to manage everything on your behalf, but there are steps you can take. Please take a look at the backup guide that I wrote and let me know if this helps.

One more thing. You mentioned that you have a site with 500+ pages. While a site can have up to 1000 pages, Squarespace don't recommend adding more than 400 as it can have a significant negative affect on site performance, so it may be worth reviewing this content to see if it can be removed or restructured.

Hello thanks for sending over the guide, that's very useful!

I would like to reduce our page number. Unfortunately, when I inherited the site, every page is actually an index made up of multiple pages (so that each page could have a different background). The site is on version 7.0 so we can't make different blocks on a page.

It would just take me too long to restructure the whole site sadly 😕 but noted for future reference. Thanks again

I also have a client website with 100+ pages (but less than the 400 recommended limit). Several people are allowed to log in and make content changes, so there are multiple opportunities every day for something to go catastrophically wrong. (We lost a legacy gallery block with 150+ images just the other day, after having carefully preserved it during the switch from 7.0 to 7.1!)

I know we can't backup the site via built-in "Duplicate site." I read the guide you linked to in your earlier response, but it looks like you didn't have suggestions for sites over 100 pages?

Surely there's something we can do via a plug-in or a third-party service. An xls file it better than nothing, but just barely, because the content is spread across so many different blocks & sections that copying/pasting will take a looooooong time.

I'm stressed because no backups + no roll-back function = a hot mess for this client & many volunteer org's, where whoever's available comes in and makes changes.

Any help appreciated, thanks!
