Trying to create a portfolio site that will impress... CSS isn't working. Help!

Recommended Posts

So, I am new to Squarespace. I need this to impress high end creative directors, and I just can't seem to get this site on the right path. (If you look at the site, please click around. Not every linked page has been created yet.)

I wanted to have a cool carousel that would be clickable to the galleries of designs. Worked on it for days only to realize carousels are not clickable without making a clunky button underneath, and I don't want that. I asked Squarespace for help and they basically told me it was not possible and that they don't recommend using Custom CSS.

So of course I started looking at Custom CSS.

I thought maybe the carousel was the wrong move, so I made a gallery and hoped I could do some CSS to make it cooler. I was hoping to have hover actions with type saying "Packaging," "Collateral," "Kids Design" etc... but the CSS only worked in edit mode. So, I gave up on that. I'm at the point where I just want to go to bed and forget all about it. I'm frustrated.

I would love insights and feedback on what you think could really make this site look better, and HOW TO MAKE IT WORK relatively easily if possible.

Honestly, I am SO TIRED of working on my portfolio site... I just want to get a new job already and be working!!!

Helllllp.

TIA!

Try this for making a list item clickable:

As for how to make the site look better, that's really subjective, and I'm being cautious about giving feedback to another designer with a different aesthetic. I can give you specific suggestions if you want to improve your Squarespace experience like the clickable list items.

I love feedback and suggestions. I learn from other people, and I don't have to change stuff if I'm not into it. Fire away!

Your work is great, I just don't think that it can sing in the website design. Hard to put my finger on it exactly, but the features don't gel: the blue italic serif font being used for headings; the footer with a wavy divider and background texture; the use of black and white is too stark and draws your eye in the wrong way for me.

I don't know if that helps you in any direction specifically. I might try to simplify and go minimalist like the logo and try and let the images speak for themselves.
