What is the deal with Indexing?

So what is the deal with indexing? I have a site that when I look in search console I have 9 pages indexed and 23 not. I've requested an updated indexing for the obvious (?) important pages. A lot of the pages that aren't indexed appear to be blog pages. Is this normal? What's the best practice here for our sites?
