Change color of menu items and background on click

I am using the footer as a mega menu via the Will Meyers plug in (https://www.will-myers.com/articles/building-a-mega-menu-in-squarespace-71-free), and I am now trying to change the color of the parent menu as well as the color of the active link in the parent menu on click, and have it reverse when the parent menu item is clicked again.

I am assuming I need to use javascript or jquery with a click event, but I can't seem to get it to work after hours of trying. Any help would be greatly appreciated 😃 thank you so much!
