Support for JPEG image + HDR Gain Maps

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This message is intended for the Squarespace dev team.

Google Chrome 116 or higher recently released support for JPEG + HDR Gain Maps to show higher dynamic range on capable HDR/XDR displays.

These HDR gain map JPEG files are now supported/exported in Adobe Software (Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom).

I would like to publish these JPEGs to Squarespace and then preview them in Chrome. However, Squarespace strips the JPEG Gain Map metadata from the file and therefore only previews as SDR on an HDR capable monitor.

Reference files attached: The first file is the JPEG+Gain Map file (which looks great in Chrome!) and then the second file is what Squarespace generates after publishing to my site.

Please consider supporting JPEG + Gain Maps.

Regards,

Barry Young

Senior Director of Engineering for Adobe Lightroom

I would very much be interested in knowing when support for gain maps and this new HDR format will be supported by squarespace websites.

The folks on this forum are users like yourself. We have no inside knowledge about Squarespace's plans.

Given what I've seen of SS's behaviour I wouldn't expect JPEG-HDR to be supported anytime soon. SS doesn't even support webp.

As far as I can tell JPEG-HDR has virtually no use penetration on websites statistically. Certainly less than webp.
