featuring posts from multiple blogs on the home page?

I am building a site with multiple sections, several of which have their own chronological event listings. I am planning to use a blog format to make it easy for each section owner to post and archive their content updates.

Question: I'd like to surface recent posts on the home page. how do I create a sidebar ("News & Updates") on the home page that will aggregate the most recent entries from multiple blogs on the site?
