HELP - How to create galleries/carousels of links for writing portfolio

Recommended Posts

Hello, I hope you're all well! This is my first time posting in these forums.

I have used Squarespace before to build two other websites, however I am now attempting something new - a personal portfolio for my writing. Unfortunately, I am struggling.

I thought this would be far simpler to create, given the type of site, which is basically a glorified linktree, but I can't figure out how to do it.

I envision something very straightforward - four galleries or carousels that contain 1) titles, 2) links with preview images, 3) captions with the link title and subtitle.

For example, these would say something like SOCCER WRITING with links to the various soccer articles I've published, each with the piece title and publication as the title and subtitle. Below that would be MUSIC WRITING, etc., as I go through the different categories. Ideally the final one would just be one video where I could show a reel of multimedia work.

Besides my name and a headshot at the top of the webpage, and perhaps social links in the corner that's all the entire site needs to contain.

However, the closest I've come to being able to create this very simple concept is photo galleries, where I have to manually download and upload the article's cover image, and then link the piece to the photo. But this is not its purpose, so it doesn't work well - there is no way to add a category title or subtitles on the individual entries. Worse still, instead of simply resizing to fit the width of the screen on mobile, the mobile version expands the gallery to multiple rows to fit all the content in, making the page completely unusable, when the entries should simply float offscreen on either side so that the user can flip through.

Can someone please direct me to the proper way to do this? Perhaps there is some premade block or something that is just not available in the templates I've tried so far?

See attached image for a visual.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! I have not - I do not see that option. Is it a section or a block? I tried searching for it and nothing came up.

I did this quick video (Click Add a Section > Choose People on left list > Then choose a section with (i) icon on right

Thank you again for such a thorough reply, I really appreciate your help.

Unfortunately, I am experiencing two issues with this.

The first issue is, I do not see how to make the images clickable. Where do I insert the links to the articles that I want people to be able to reach by selecting the corresponding thumbnail?

Secondly, when viewed on mobile, instead of simply scaling down so that they're presented the same way, these carousels are blown up massively with each entry taking up the entire width of the screen for some reason, defeating the entire purpose of presenting the portfolio in this coherent, categorized, and easily-viewable format.

How do I correct these two issues?

#1. You can enable list items buttons, then we can give code to turn button url to item url (make image, title clickable)

#2. We can use code to resize it on mobile, if you can provide page url

Thanks again for your continued help - I apologize for the slow replies, I've just started a new job and have been very busy.

I'm definitely interested in learning how to use code to achieve these two goals.

Do you have a guide or any advice on how I can learn how to do that? Or is this a service that is provided somewhere somehow? I'm very inexperienced with anything more complicated than tinkering with embed codes.
